Know Your Provider

Ensure you are dealing with a licensed funeral director and funeral home when making funeral prearrangements. In Michigan, funeral directors are required to place 100% of the preneed funds in a third party escrow. It is safe, transferable and refundable. It's still your money until time of need and can only be canceled by you the consumer. All members of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association (MFDA) are fully licensed and maintain a strict code of ethics. Commissioned sales people may or may not be licensed funeral directors nor affiliated with a licensed funeral home.

You don't have to pre-pay to pre-plan. 

While Shaw Funeral Home recommends prefinancing funeral services. But just getting your own choices down on paper gives your family a map to follow in the event of your death and relieves a tremendous burden. 

Making financial decisions rationally, before the need, affords you the time and patience to make good choices. Emotional issues at the time of death can sometimes cloud judgment. The stress of having to make these choices can sometimes get in the way of what's really important...healing.
